Tell me a bit about you...

 

My name is Jenny, I am a York-based foodie who has a huge passion for cooking. Luckily, I've grown up with a family whom all have amazing cooking skills and a huge appreciation for healthy, homegrown and homemade food. It's easy to say I've learnt from the best (although I am slightly biased). 

When I'm not busy in the kitchen, you can find me, eating, doing anything active and walking my dog Milo with my boyfriend Josh. 

When did you start Defying Hangry? 

 

I started my Defying Hangry Instagram account in July 2018. I then started my blog a few months later as I had a lot of friends and family asking for the recipes and general inspiration when it came to nutritious, plant-based meals. 

Why did you start Defying Hangry? 

The main reason I started Defying Hangry is purely because of my passion for cooking - It's my favourite hobby in the entire world!

 

I also love the idea of both vegans and non-vegans trying new dishes (especially when they're mine). My aim isn't to make everyone a vegan or a vegetarian (although that would be a bonus), it's to make people think more about what they're eating and where their food is coming from. 

How did you think of the name Defying Hangry?

 

If you're not too sure what hanger means, here's a little help from good old urban dictionary:

 

"A lethal combination of hunger and anger, the result of waiting so long to eat that your blood sugar drops to dangerously low levels, impairing both your mood and your judgment. Particularly manifests itself when you are with a significant other and trying to make decisions about where to eat now that you're both starving."  

 

If you know me well, you'll know that when I'm hungry I can get a bit grouchy (Josh knows all too well). It's safe to say that I am a huge victim of hanger, to the point where I will actually bring snacks with me, wherever I go just in case - I am constantly defying hanger (hence where the name came from). 

Are you vegan?

 

I call myself a flexi-vegan - I eat vegan food around 95% of the time but I will very occasionally eat eggs, dairy and on special occasions I may even tuck into some fish and chips. It's a lifestyle that works well for me and keeps me feeling full of energy and my hanger under control. 

Why did you choose to start a vegan blog? 

 

I only ever cook vegan food at home so it made sense to start a vegan blog. I choose to cook vegan food at home as I truly believe the lifestyle means we eat healthy, delicious food that hugely helps the environment.

How do you get inspiration for your recipes? 

I get my inspiration from a range of places, I sometimes try and re-create meat classics but with a vegan spin, I'll also re-create dishes that I've enjoyed at restaurants and cafes. Other food bloggers and chefs also spark a huge amount of creativity and inspiration, but always making sure I put my own Defying Hangry spin on each dish is very important.
